The Dean, School of Communication and Media studies, Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), Ikere-Ekiti, Dr. Daniel Nwanmereni, has commended the people of Ekiti State for conducting themselves peacefully before, during and after the governorship election in the state.
Dr. Nwanmereni who gave the commendation while speaking with journalists in his office in Ikere-Ekiti, described the election as one of the most peaceful in the state’s history.
He expressed delight that the election was largely free of violence and rancour, particularly in Ikere-Ekiti, the hometown of two of the leading candidates in the poll.
According to him, the peaceful atmosphere reflected the political maturity and civility of the people.
The university lecturer noted that unlike other states, such a political contest involving prominent candidates from the same community could have resulted in tension and violence.
He praised the political actors and their supporters in Ekiti for embracing peaceful coexistence throughout the electoral process.
“I must say that Ekiti people are among the most peace-loving citizens in the country. I was impressed by the peaceful conduct of the election. The people displayed remarkable maturity and there was no significant violence. That is highly commendable”. He said.
Drawing a comparison with elections in some parts of the country, Dr. Nwanmereni observed that the peaceful outcome in Ekiti provides an example worthy of study.
“For two leading candidates, one a governorship candidate and the other a deputy governorship candidate, to come from the same town and yet have such a peaceful election is remarkable. In some states, such a situation could have led to serious unrest”. He added.
Dr. Nwanmereni also applauded the Governor of Ekiti State for providing what he described as a level playing field for all political actors, saying the peaceful conduct of the election reflected the administration’s commitment to democratic values.
“I also commend the Governor for ensuring that the election was conducted without intimidation or violence. His approach demonstrates a commitment to peace and democratic governance”. He said.
