The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Ekiti State Command, Mr Toma Enya has issued a stern waning to Construction Companies, Contractors and other players in the construction industry to desist from wanton and avoidable damage to fibre-optic cables and other public properties in the state.

Commandant Enya, while addressing newsmen at the state headquarters of the command along Ikere /Ado Road stated that, fibre-optic cables were Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) that are pivotal to the socioeconomic development of the nation.

He warned that actions leading to damages of these infrastructure would no longer be tolerated as it negatively affects communication connectivity and seamless wire interactions.

The Commandant noted that any damage arising from authorised and unauthorized excavation, construction, activities or failure to coordinate players in the construction industry with relevant authorities is deemed a criminal act under the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) order 2024.

He explained that the Command is set to begin on the spot assessment of ongoing projects along optic fibre routes in the state.

“I urge all stakeholders in the construction industry both public and private, to adhere strictly to laid down regulations and collaborate with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Telecom operators and the NSCDC to safeguard our common heritage from needless destruction to enable the end users enjoy public and private property put together to make life easy for the People of the state”

Mr. Enya further appealed to members of the public to promptly report incidents of damage or destruction of fibre-optic cables to the nearest NSCDC office with an assurance that the Command will prosecute any erring contractor, individuals or business owners found in the act of economic sabotage.
