The National Identity Management Commission( NIMC), Ekiti State, has held a sensitization rally as part of activities marking the 2026 National Day of Identity, describing NIN platform as a veritable opportunity to strengthen national security, digital coverage and ensure effective national.planning.
The rally held in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Wednesday, afforded NIMC to sensitize members of the public on the need to make themselves available for NIN registration.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Nigeria’s Digital Public Ecosystem (Powering Africa’s Digital Economy”, aiming at using technology to make life easier, improve access to services and create greater opportunities for Nigerians.
The NIMC State Coordinator, Mr Taiwo Ogundare, while addressing Journalists, said building Nigeria’s Digital Public ecosystem was to provide a secured, unified, and trusted foundation for public and private services.
According to him, “Nigeria is advancing technologically and going digital, hence, the need to create awareness for people to be registered for their National Identification Number .
“A strong and inclusive national identity system remains indispensable to effective governance, national planning, security, financial inclusion, digital transformation and the successful implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu”.
Ogundare applauded the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote for providing an enabling environment for NIMC officials to perform their responsibilities diligently.
He noted that achieving universal identity coverage requires sustained public enlightenment and grassroots mobilisation with a promise that NIMC in Ekiti would continue to deepen its collaboration with other agencies to provide an effective platform for reaching every Nigerian.
Mr Ogundare expressed dissatisfaction that despite regular sensitization and community engagement as put in place by the Director General, many Nigerians had not registered for their NIN, urging Nigerians to avail themselves the opportunity put in place by the Commission.
Also speaking during the rally, Assistant Directors of NIMC in Ekiti, Engineer Nurudeen Olutayo and Mr Francis Osho, as well as Head of Administration of NIMC, Mr Abiodun Babatunde, explained that NIMC introduced digital tools to ease registration and updates nationwide.
They warned Ekiti residents against patronising unauthorised agents or sharing personal identity details with third parties, saying NIMC offices are available in all the 16 local government areas of the state.
National Day of Identity is observed annually on September 16 to raise awareness about the importance of legal identification in national development, social inclusion, and digital economies
